The Gaffer reflects on his first season with The Bastion

Updated: Dec 16, 2023

The Bastion Insider :- How did you feel the season went?

Chris Currer :- I feel the season overall went as to be expected. Considering the circumstances of COVID, plus the arrival of 4 new players, and implementation of a new system and philosophy of play, there was a lot of work to be done. We achieved our goals and played some great football. Through the hard work of the players and all coaches and back room staff involved I feel we have provided ourselves now with a solid platform from which we can achieve more through out this coming season.

The Bastion Insider :- What was the best moment for you this season?

Chris Currer :- The best moment for me this season I would have to say is going up 5:0 at half time vs College having played some brilliant football and then hearing the players talking amongst themselves saying “we’ve never been in this position before”. This gave me great confidence and belief that all the hard work on the training ground was starting to reep its rewards.

"I want all teams to know that facing Zoca will be no easy task, and I want the players to buy in to this."

The Bastion Insider :- What was the biggest challenge this season?

Chris Currer :- The biggest challenge this season for me was to find a style of play that suited the players we have whilst also making sure it could be seen that we were trying to play attractive and exciting football for our fans.

The Bastion Insider :- How have you found the team camaraderie?

Chris Currer :- The team camaraderie has been absolutely fantastic! No doubt aided by the fact we are strictly adhering to acquiring the services of local footballers only. It was an ambition of mine to come to a club that feels like a family, and with Zoca, that’s exactly what you’ve got.

The Bastion Insider :- What do you think will be biggest challenge next season and what do you hope for next season?

Chris Currer :- Next seasons biggest challenge will be to become more competitive vs all teams in the league. I want all teams to know that facing Zoca will be no easy task, and I want the players to buy in to this. But this is where the hard work on the training ground counts. I’m positive this will be achieved with the lads we have and those we have recently brought in. Ultimately I would like what every fan wants; exciting football full of goals, opportunities, and everyone involved with this club to wear their heart on their sleeve!
